THE RISK FACTORS OF HEART DISEASES

Our lifestyles play a pivotal role in our cardiovascular health. There are non-modifiable risk factors such as family history and genetics – these cannot be changed. However, there are also many other risk factors which you have control over. These are blood pressure; smoking; cholesterol levels; diabetes; obesity; a sedentary lifestyle; stress; and diet.

The more risk factors you have, the higher the chances of having heart disease. Therefore, it is never too late to begin living a healthier lifestyle.

HOW IS HEART DISEASE DIAGNOSED?

Blood Test

A blood test studies the levels of cholesterol and enzyme known as troponin. Someone with a healthy heart would have very low and undetectable levels of troponin. If a test were to return positive for it, it is highly likely the individual has suffered a heart attack or injury to the heart.

Electrocardiogram (ECG)

This test measures and records the electrical activity generated by your heart. The results will then reflect if there are any cardiac abnormalities.

Echocardiogram

Sound waves are used to produce moving images of your heart and its surrounding blood vessels. This allows your cardiologist to observe how your heart functions. It can help to diagnose the damage sustained from a heart attack; heart failure; congenital heart disease; cardiomyopathy; endocarditis; and defective heart valves.

Stress Test

You will be required to use a treadmill or if you are unable to due to health problems and restrictions, medication may be given to stress your heart. The objective is to observe how the heart functions and how well it handles strain when a person is active.

Cardiac CT

A special type of dye is injected via your arm to visualise your blood vessels on an X-ray. This helps your doctor to detect blockages and measure the amount of calcium in your coronary arteries. The higher the calcium score, the higher the risk of heart disease.
