Water birth is an alternative birthing method that uses water to relieve pain, offering the mother to have a more natural labour. Water allows the mother to relax, resulting in a less stressful labour and delivery. Water immersion enables the mother to sit in water that covers her belly. Being buoyant in water helps to hasten labour.

• Water provides natural buoyancy, so the mother is free to assume any comfortable birth position as the body feels lighter.
• Being in water is a wonderful experience since it calms and relaxes the mother.
• Laboring in water or water immersion has been shown to decrease the time of labor and reduce the use of pain medication.
• Water birthing carries many other advantages, such as less perineal tears, lower rates of episiotomies and operative deliveries.

To have a water birth, you must:

• Have an uncomplicated pregnancy and delivery history.
• Be free of any medical conditions as per doctor's assessment.
• Preferably has a Body Mass Index (BMI) equal to or less than 35 at booking visit.
• Be pregnant with only one baby and the position of your baby is head facing down.
