Functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) is a minimally invasive procedure used to visualise, diagnose and treat sinus problems. One of our experienced ENT specialists will gently insert a small instrument called a “telescope” into your nostril to examine the area to be operated on, then use specialised tools to effectively restore drainage and ventilation between your nose and your sinuses.
Your sinuses are hollow cavities in your skull that can fill up with mucus, and become inflamed and swollen. This inflammation obstructs the flow of the mucus, resulting in sinusitis.
If your sinusitis does not improve with traditional medical therapies such as antibiotics, nasal drops or tablet treatments, your ENT specialist may recommend a CT scan to evaluate your condition to decide whether you should undergo FESS. By performing FESS, we will be able to give you an accurate diagnosis and better treat your condition.
Open sinus procedures often require facial incisions resulting in visible scars and the need for nasal packing. With FESS, your surgeon can have a better view within your nose and sinuses so surgery is almost always done completely through the nostrils, leaving no visible signs and minimal scarring. This means that you will experience less post-operative pain and bleeding, leading to faster recovery. FESS also minimises the need for nasal packing, enabling you to breathe normally through your nose with minimal discomfort.
